Once, you were sent there, now you get to go there. Formerly known as Finland’s largest and most dangerous prison, Kakola has a colorful history as the home of bad boys. Today, it offers a wide range of spa services designed for adults and a private hotel that focuses on personalized, high-quality service and sustainable choices.
Room options
Hotel Kakola offers a range of room options from cells to suites – of course. In addition to the more traditional standard and superior rooms, there are authentic cell rooms for a unique experience, as well as family rooms featuring barred bunk beds. For those with more demanding tastes, unique options such as traditional suites and the one-of-a-kind Boat Suite are sure to impress.
Hotel or nearby restaurant offerings
Within Hotel Kakola, you’ll find the restaurant Ruben, open to all, set in the historic ambiance of the former prison canteen. Ruben’s menu celebrates local producers and frequently changes based on the season’s best offerings. The menu features a wide variety of dishes for both small and large appetites. Kakolanmäki also offers other dining options – for a more refined experience, visit Restaurant Kakolanruusu, or for a quick bite, try KBC Taproom, where you can enjoy delicious pizza and beer brewed on-site.
Distance from the center and significant landmarks
Hotel Kakola is located on Kakolanmäki, the second-highest hill in the city. You can descend via several routes, using various modes of transport, but the most famous is Funikulaari – the hillside funicular. From there, it’s just about a kilometer walk along the riverside to the market square.
Hotel breakfast
Our hearty buffet breakfast is served on weekdays from 6:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. and on weekends and public holidays from 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Our breakfast features a rich selection of local delicacies, and we are continuously expanding our offerings for special dietary needs. Kakola’s porridge and Kakola’s yogurt are crowd favorites!
Hotel director’s introduction and service promise
Hotel Director Mikael Aaltonen has gained extensive hospitality experience abroad and knows what it takes to exceed a guest’s expectations. His leadership style reflects high standards and a spirit of teamwork – “My service promise for both Hotel Kakola and Kakola Spa is to deliver unforgettable experiences that you’ll want to share with others. Our service is personable, and everyone is welcome as they are.”
Hotel’s signature drink and its story
Our signature drink, “Elinkautinen” (Life Sentence), is named after the fact that Kakola once housed the highest number of life-sentenced prisoners in Finland. Elinkautinen is a refreshing, pear-flavored alcoholic cocktail, served true to style in a tin cup.
